The Well-Traveled Sunflower

Sunflowers originated in the Western Hemisphere, yet one of the most popular varieties is called the Mammoth Russian. It's a plant with a transoceanic history.

Wild sunflowers are often seen along the roadside here in Colorado, of course. Years ago I drove to Raton, NM, then up and over Johnson Mesa, then to Folsom, NM, and back up into Colorado through Branson. I took backroads from there west to Trinidad (it's a very interesting drive). Between Branson and Trinidad, the plains north of the Raton Mesa complex were covered in wild sunflowers as far as the eye could see. A pretty place.
